Captain Can Spell word game

fun to play, easy to learn, strategic depth

Captain Can Spell is a new word game playing with 52 letter cards. Your goal is to race against another player to play all your cards word by word. The faster you finish, the more penalty points your opponent will take! This game involves anagram, spelling and vocabulary skills just like other word games but the challenge is different and unique. It is primarily a game of duels, but it can hold up to 4 players with slightly different rules.

Each player is dealt 13 cards, the rest of 26 cards are placed into the draw pile. Players take turns to play a word, the first player starts to play any word and place it into the discard pile, the next player must draw an equal or higher ranking word and so on.

All words are ranked, from lowest to highest, the first letter of a word in alphabetical order. That is, words starting with A are the lowest and words starting with Z are the highest. For example, the first player played 'B'right, the next player can play 'B'atch (same ranking) or 'C'at (higher ranking), but this player cannot play 'A'pple (lower ranking).

Under this climbing process, the ranking of played words will get higher. If the active player cannot play any word, he/she must take a pass, draw 2 cards from the draw pile and end the turn. The next player can place any new word afterward.

When a player plays all the cards wins the round and the losing player takes penalty points from the remaining cards in his/her hand plus the cards in the draw pile, 1 point each. The losing player goes first for the next round. The game ends when one of the players reaches the cumulative penalty points of 100 and loses the game.

In case the draw pile is exhausted, the game continues but both players do not need to draw any card to pass the turn. Instead, they would try to finish their cards as much as possible, the remaining cards add up to their penalty points respectively.

The gameplay for 2-4 players is similar, instead the draw pile is never exhausted, played cards will be reshuffled and return to the draw pile just like crazy 8 or Uno. There are two ways to play:1) The first player plays all the cards is the 'captain', the rest of the players continue to play, the second player goes out is the chief officer, followed by second officer and third officer. 2) When a player wins, the rest of the players count their cards, 1,2 and 5 points for each consonant, vowel and wild card respectively and add up to their penalty points. Once one of the player reaches the cumulative penalty points of 50, the game ends and the player with the lowest penalty point is the winner.
